Conversational hypnosis

It is widely acknowledged that vocally induced hypnosis is the easiest, and hence the most commonly used technique of hypnosis. The power of suggestion is universally acknowledged as strong. Conversational hypnosis is inducing hypnosis using natural but well directed conversation. It is markedly different from the traditional means of inducing hypnosis where the subject lies down or sits, and the hypnotist speaks to him or her.

During conversational hypnosis, a hypnotist encourages a subject to discuss the situation or any problems he or she might be facing and then asks questions or makes statements which cause alternative thought in the subject's mind. This alternative cross questioning results in extracting an altered view of the situation and hence presents an entirely different set of thoughts or solutions to remedy the situation.

The process of conversational hypnosis is one that requires conscious adherence to a certain procedure. A three step procedure inducing the state of hypnosis deals with affinity, distraction and proposition.

Affinity

The subject must accept to what the problem he or she is facing and then accept the fact that it needs to be remedied. As is generally accepted, nobody can be hypnotized against his or her wishes and acknowledgement of the problems is the first step in the road to getting a cure.

Psychological remedy too works on the same premise. Say a phobia of crowds is to be removed, a subject must accept the fact that he or she has trouble talking or acting out in front of a crowd letting the hypnotist build a base for further work. The hypnotist, while doing this, must establish clearly that he has an affinity to what the subject is undergoing, as genuinely as the subject itself.

Distraction

The hypnotist then has the task of distracting the subject's mind by asking the questions that lead on to things besides the problem itself. For example, he can ask, "How do you think you would fare as the last living person?" The question though hypothetical and a little preposterous does challenge the very idea of living without crowds of people, in near complete isolation. The idea is to get the subject's mind to completely suspend all problems and concentrate on the thoughts fed to him or her, which will lead to a direction where a plausible solution is available. The distractive methods should entail questions which are relevant to the problem at hand, but not direct or overbearing.

Proposition

Once the subject is engrossed in thoughts of things related to the problem, but no the problem itself, the hypnotist has the opportunity to suggest his own solutions to the problems faced by the subject. These may include suggestions of behaviour modification, or remedial solutions. For example, the hypnotists can conclude describing what would happen if the subject cut himself or herself off the crowds or people, and suggest that being friendlier to people might just be the important step.

Conversational hypnosis is an important role in getting people to important conclusions and to help him or her make conclusive decisions in life. It is a psychological science of great importance in remedying habit forming disorders too.
